Bishop Mar Mathew Arackal was born on Dec. 10, 1944 in Erumely of Kottayam district of Kerala. After schooling he joined St. Thomas Minor Seminary, Changanacherry. He completed Philosophy and Theology from St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. He was ordained a priest on March 13, 1971 by Mar Antony Padiyara. He served as an Assistant Vicar of the Amboori Church, vicar of Elappara. He also served the Church as the Director of Samaritan Hospital and the estate Manager of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. He was appointed as the Assistant Procurator of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry.

He was elected Bishop of Kanjirapally when Bishop Mar Mathew Vattakuzhy resigned and his Episcopal consecration was on Feb. 9, 2001. His motto is "to have life and have it abundantly."

He is the founder of the first Labour Co-operative Society in Kerala. He also founded Peermade Development Society (PDS) which is considered as one of the most outstanding NGOs in India. To empower women he started Kallivayalil Pappan Memorial Charitable Trust (KPMC). He is also credited with the establishment of High Range Medical Centre, Sahyadri Ayurvedic Pharmaceuticals and two residential training centers for rural development.

Bishop Mathew Arackal holds several responsibilities: He is the Chairman of Kerala Service Forum (KSSF), Chairman of KCBC Commission for Justice, Peace and Development, Member of CBCI Commission for Scheduled Caste, Tribes and Backward classes. He was the Chairman of Jeevan Telecasting Corporation Ltd., a television channel, Advisor to the Planning Commission of Government of India. He also served as the Chairman of Rashtra Deepika Ltd., a Catholic newspaper. He was the member of the Governing Body of Continuing Education Cell of Kerala State, Academic Council Member of Kerala State, TIA for Rajeev Gandhi Water Mission of Government of India, and Science and Technology, Government of India.

He is the resource person for Capart, Govt. of India, Kerala State Farming Corporation, The Task Force for Participatory Planning, State Council for Education, Research and Training and Watershed Development and Management Team. He is the only representative from Asia and Africa to the International Delegate Assembly of Naturland, Germany.
