Bishop Emmanuel T. Cabajar, CSsR, D.D. was born on Oct. 8, 1942, in Jetafe, Bohol. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 18, 1966, and was appointed Bishop of Pagadian on May 14, 2004. His episcopal ordination was on Aug. 14, 2004. He was installed on Sept. 2, 2004.
Emmanuel "Manny" Cabajar is a Redemptorist missionary who spent most of his life preaching parish missions in Mindanao. He was based in Davao from 1969 to 1984 and in Iligan from 1984 to 1990. With four confreres, he initiated in 1990 the Redemptorist Itinerant Mission Community (RIMC) in order to respond more effectively to urgent pastoral needs. RIMC is now recognized as an alternative way of living the Redemptorist life in the Philippines.
Manny was elected vicar provincial in 1996 and was assigned in Cebu as superior of Holy Family Retreat and the Cebu Mission Team. He had to leave for Rome the following year as he was elected general consultor of the congregation for a term of six years (1997-2003). While in that office, half of his time was spent on official visitations to Redemptorist provinces in various countries in order to animate them in their mission.
Manny jokingly says he was already an itinerant even from his mother's womb. His parents, Felicidad Ramiro Treveño and Tomas Torrejos Cabajar were "San Nicolasnon" but were constantly on the move during the Japanese occupation. It was during the family's brief sojourn in Jetafe, Bohol that Manny, who claims to have been conceived in Cebu, was born on Oct. 8, 1942. He grew up in San Nicolas, Cebu City, with his three sisters (Concy, Lina, Soring) and three brothers (George, Tony, Lory), and completed elementary school there at age of 11. He studied for one year in Abellana Technical High School. Then, in 1955, he entered the Seminario Menor de San Carlos in Mabolo where he spent five years - the equivalent of high school and first year college.
Manny joined the Redemptorist novitiate in 1960. He was professed on July 2, 1961. He studied philosophy and dogma in the newly built Saint Alphonsus Seminary (SAS) in Cebu. He was sent to Ireland to complete his theological studies in Cluain Mhuire, Galway, where he was ordained on Dec. 18, 1966. He was sent to Rome for licentiate studies (1967 - 1969) after which he volunteered to work in Davao as a missioner. While being based in Davao he was sent to do a doctoral course in moral theology in Madrid (1975 - 1977). He came back to Davao and each year from 1978 to 1985 he alternated between preaching missions and teaching part time in St. Francis Xavier Seminary.
