Bishop Gerald John Mathias was born on Sept. 20, 1953, in Kalianpur, Mangalore diocese, in Karnataka state. He was ordained a priest on April 22, 1979. He was appointed Bishop of Shimla-Chandigarh on Dec. 22, 1999, and was ordained bishop on April 9, 2000. On Nov. 8, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Lucknow. He was installed as the fifth bishop of the diocese on Jan. 4, 2008. Before this, he had served as the Cathedral parish priest in Lucknow. Bishop Mathias is chairman of the Laity Commission in the Latin-rite Conference of Catholic Bishops of India. He also chairs the Agra Regional Commission for Education & Culture and is President of Catholic Educational Institutions in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
