Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo was born on November 12, 1949 in Agrar, Mangalore and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore on May 5, 1977. After serving the mother diocese of Mangalore as an assistant parish priest and parish priest he guided the social development in Mangalore Diocese as the director of Canara Organization for Development and Peace. After serving as the Episcopal Vicar of Kasaragod deanery of Mangalore he was appointed as the Bishop of Shimoga Diocese on January 17, 2000. He was ordained a Bishop of Shimoga by Archbishop Ignatius Pinto on March 20, 2000. After leading the diocese of Shimoga for 12 years he was appointed as the first Bishop of Udupi on July 16, 2012. He was installed as the first bishop of Udupi on October 15, 2012 by Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India. As Bishop of
Shimoga he was known to be an animator for systematic pastoral planning of the Diocese. He was instrumental in establishing 4 new parishes, 14 new missions, 91 new sub-missions, 13 nursery schools, 8 primary schools, 9 high schools, 8 pre-university colleges, 2 degree colleges as well as a couple of nursing and training centers. Has given leadership to put up and start number of new structures, social service units, self help groups, women empowering projects, children oriented growth projects, arrival of 21 women religious congregations to the diocese and 9 men religious congregations.
