Bishop Cyprian Monis

Bishop Cyprian Monis was born on April 11, 1945, in Mysore. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 21, 1975. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Calcutta Archdiocese on March 26, 1994, and his episcopal ordination followed on Aug. 4 that year. Bishop Monis served as Episcopal Vicar for the Santal tribal community, and when Asansol diocese was created on Oct. 24, 1997, with territory taken from the archdiocese, he was appointed its first bishop. Asansol was officially inaugurated on 12 March 1998. Bishop Monis chairs the Youth Commission of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.
