Bishop Mattheus Van Khoi Nguyen

Bishop Mattheus Nguyen Van Khoi was born on Oct. 13, 1951 at Go Thi parish in Binh Dinh province. He entered the local Lang Song minor seminary in 1963 and studied philosophy and theology at the Pius X Pontifical Institute in Da Lat from 1970-1977. At the same time he also studied literature at the Catholic University of Da Lat. He did pastoral work at a local parish and worked as a farmer for a living for years until he was ordained a priest on May 10, 1989. He served as pastor of Nam Binh parish and taught at Stella Maris Major Seminary in Nha Trang city until 2000, when he was sent to study at the Pontifical University of Urbaniana in Rome and obtained a doctorate in moral theology in 2005. After he returned to Vietnam, he served as pastor of the cathedral and taught at the major seminary. He was named coadjutor bishop of Quy Nhon diocese on Dec. 31, 2009 and his Episcopal ordination was on Feb. 4, 2010 at the cathedral. He succeded Bishop Pierre Nguyen Soan, whose resignation Pope Benedict XVI accepted on Jun 30, 2012.

Bishop Khoi heads the Episcopal Commission for Holy Arts of the Vietnam Bishops' Conference.
