Bishop Mar George Njaralakatt was born on 23 June 1946 at Kalayanthany, Thodupuzha, in the eparchy of Kothamangalam as the first born of Varkey (Late) and Mary (Late) Njaralakatt. He has a sister and one brother. In the year 1960 his family migrated to Malabar and settled in Nadavayal, Wayanad. Hence, he had his High School studies at St. Thomas High School, Nadavayal. He had obtained BA degree from Mysore University.

He had his Minor Seminary formation in St. Joseph's Minor Seminary Thalasserry from 1963 to 1965, Philosophy and Theology studies at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva from 1965-1972. He was ordained priest on 20 December 1971 at Thalassery by Mar Sebastian Valloppilly. He had his higher studies at Pontifical Salesian University in Rome (from Sept 1983 to December 1986) and obtained Licentiate in Catechetics in October 1986.

After the ordination he was appointed assistant parish priest at Kanichar in the Archieparchy of Tellichery. On 18th January 2010, he was appointed the bishop of the newly erected diocese of Mandya, in Karnataka and was consecrated on 7th April 2010 at Infant Jesus Cathedral Church at Hinkal, Mysore and took charge of his office on the same day. The Bishops House at Kalenahalli, Mandya was blessed on 9th April 2010 and he started living there on the same day.
