Bishop Dominikus Saku was born on April 3, 1960, in Taekas, a hamlet in Tunbaba village, North Central Timor district. Having attended Atambua dioceseĀ“s minor seminary, he was ordained a priest for the diocese on Sept. 29, 1992. Following studies at Pontifical Urban University in Rome 1995-1999, he returned with a doctorate in philosophy and taught at St Michael's Major Seminary and Widya Mandhira Catholic University, both in Kupang. (Atambua diocese and Kupang archdiocese cover West Timor.)

From 2001 to 2006 he served as prefect of St. Michael's, and he became dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Religion at Widya Mandhira in December 2006. Meanwhile, he also assisted at Christ the King Cathedral in Kupang and at a mission station in Baun.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Atambua on June 2, 2007. He was ordained bishop on Sept. 21, 2007.

BIshop Saku is in the third bishop from West Timor, after the late Divine Word Archbishop Gabriel Manek of Ende and Bishop Benyamin Bria of Denpasar. His predecessors in Atambua all were Divine Word bishops.
