Cardinal John Tong Hon was born in Hong Kong on July 31, 1939, and ordained a priest on Jan. 6, 1966. He became a Vicar General in 1992 and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong on Sept. 13, 1996 and then Coadjutor Bishop on Jan. 30, 2008. He succeeded Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, a Salesian, on April 15, 2009, the day on which Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Hong Kong, China, presented by Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, upon having reached the age limit. Pope Benedict XVI announced the elevation of Bishop Tong to the rank of cardinal on Jan. 6, 2012. The ordinary public consistory, the official ceremony of elevation, took place on Feb. 18, 2012, in the Vatican.
