Oblate Bishop Jean Khamse Vithavong was born on Oct. 18, 1942 in Ban Kengsadock Village, Paksan district, Borikhamxay province, into an ethnic Meauy family. He was the youngest of nine siblings. Bishop Khamse studied philosophy and theology in France 1959-1966 and conducted further studies in the Philippines 1970-1974. He was ordained a priest on Jan. 26, 1975 at Ban Kengsadock, Paksan district, Borikhamxay province. On Nov. 19, 1982, he was appointed Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of Vientiane. He was ordained bishop on Jan. 16, 1983 and suceeded Bishop Thomas Nantha on April 7, 1984 as Vicar Apostolic of Vientiane.
