Chinese nuns take bicycle tour of villages

Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Wen Zhou diocese took a five-day pilgrimage on bicycles to the countryside in a unique evangelization effort.

The Oct. 27-31 effort of 37 nuns was aimed at witnessing to faith, evangelization and consolidating communities.

They visited villages, homes of the elderly and parish churches accompanied by two priests of Le Qing parish.

The nuns, of average 42 years of age, braved heavy rain and cold to cover more than 200 kilometers, which included tough mountainous roads.

The nuns described it as a "a pilgrimage of faith, evangelization, of community spirit."

The diocesan congregation of Wen Zhou in Zhe Jiang province was founded in 1990. The nuns are engaged in the ministry for youth, the sick, the infirm and the elderly besides working for the promotion of women.

They also help in pastoral needs, especially in organizing liturgy and retreats. They have also established a lay group called the "Living Water".

The sisters run a nursing home for the elderly and produce sacred objects for their livelihood.
