The auxiliary bishop of Shanghai, Thaddeus Ma Daqin, has said, “Faith is the happiness that God has given us.”His remarks were in reference to the encyclical, Lumen Fidei, of Pope Francis. Bishop Ma Daqin is under house arrest since his ordination, over a year,

“Faith is a gift of the Spirit that illuminates the path of life; rather it is the way of God, a way of life and light, where Christ is the tender and safe guide. It is a lamp that not only illuminates the path, but sustains us in times of deep sadness, giving us courage and reason for living. We must like Christ, be faithful and true witness, with words, but also with deeds,” the Bishop said in a rare message via a social network.

Bishop Ma Daqin had angered Beijing after he disowned the Patriotic Association, a state-controlled church body that runs the official Chinese Church, during his ordination in July 2012.

He was placed under house arrest at a seminary in the city's suburbs following his outburst. Priests believed to be close to the bishop have come under scrutiny and the government has banned ordination of priests.
