Pope Francis on Wednesday nominated Archbishop Bernardito C. Auza from Philippines to be the Holy See’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

Archbishop Bernardito C. Auza, who is presently the apostolic Nuncio to Haiti, will replace Archbishop Francis Chullikatt from India who recently finished his 4-year term in the UN.

Archbishop Auza, 55, is a native of Talibon, Bohol. He was consecrated Titular Archbishop of Suacia on May 8, 2008, on the same day in which he was appointed Nuncio to Haiti. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, then Secretary of State, was his principal consecrator.

He was Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti and also Apostolic Administrator of the capital city Porte-au-Prince after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. He is a well known diplomat having worked in various parts of the world.

His first was in Madagascar and the South Indian Ocean in 1990 to 1993. He was a member of the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the UN before assuming his post in Haiti.
