The new Raipur archbishop, transferred from Bihar's Bettiah diocese, succeeds Archbishop Joseph Augustine Charanakunnel, who resigned on reaching the canonical age of retirement.

Bishop Victor Henry Thakur was installed the new archbishop of Raipur in Chhattisgarh state on Sept. 19.

Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio led the installation ceremonies of Bishop Thakur, 59.

The new Raipur archbishop, transferred from Bihar's Bettiah diocese, succeeds Archbishop Joseph Augustine Charanakunnel, who resigned on reaching the canonical age of retirement.

Some 30 bishops, priests, religious and a large number of lay people attended the installation ceremony at St Joseph's Cathedral in Raipur.

Cardinal Telesphore Placidus Toppo, archbishop of Ranchi who had ordained Bishop Thakur for Bettiah, noted that Raipur is blessed with an experienced prelate.

Archbishop Thakur was born in Bettiah and joined Raipur diocese. He was ordained a priest in 1984. When Bettiah was carved out of Muzaffarpur diocese in 1988, he became its first bishop.

Raipur archdiocese has 33,000 Catholics in 65 parishes and missions served by 91 diocesan 62 religious priests and nuns belonging to 30 congregations. The archdiocese covers an area of 60, 814 sq. km where 22, 055,578 people, according to the latest census.

Besides pastoral ministry, the archdiocese serves the local people through 31 schools, 31 hostels, 24 health centers and various social welfare programs.
